“Marsun” Joins Thai Shipbuilding Association and 8 Industry Partners to Sign MOU Advancing Large Shipbuilding Projects in Thailand, Aiming for Frigate Construction to Strengthen National Industrial Security

Marsun Public Company Limited, together with the Thai Shipbuilding and Repairing Association and eight leading shipbuilding companies in Thailand, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to integrate the capabilities of Thailand’s private sector in advancing large-scale shipbuilding projects domestically. The initiative aims to support missions of the Royal Thai Navy and national security agencies while strengthening Thailand’s defense industry capabilities to meet international standards in a sustainable manner.

The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Suradej Tanpaibul, President of the Thai Shipbuilding and Repairing Association, Mr. Patrawin Chongvisal, Secretary-General, as well as members of the Association’s executive committee and representatives from eight private-sector companies in the shipbuilding industry.

This collaboration aims to enhance the readiness of Thai enterprises to undertake complex large-scale shipbuilding projects within the country, covering key aspects such as technology, engineering, infrastructure, skilled workforce, and financial support. It also seeks to promote the systematic development of knowledge and strengthen the domestic maritime industrial supply chain.

Thailand has previously demonstrated its growing shipbuilding capability by successfully progressing from constructing inshore patrol vessels to offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) domestically. This achievement highlights the capabilities of Thai shipyards and workforce and represents an important step toward building larger and more advanced naval vessels, such as frigates or vessels with equivalent operational capabilities. Such development will serve as a crucial foundation for the sustainable growth of Thailand’s defense industry.

This collaboration not only addresses industrial development but also contributes to long-term economic and national security. Enabling Thai companies to build large vessels domestically will help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, strengthen industrial security, and enhance Thailand’s competitiveness within the region.

The initiative also reflects the readiness of eight Thai companies to establish strategic local capabilities, including Asian Marine Services Public Company Limited, Marsun Public Company Limited, Seacrest Marine Company Limited, Unithai Shipyard and Engineering Limited, Thai International Dockyard Company Limited, Mariart (Thailand) Company Limited, Lantacruz Company Limited, and Prakarnkonlakarn Shipyard Company Limited. Each company will contribute its expertise to demonstrate Thailand’s capability and readiness to support the Royal Thai Navy and national security agencies in implementing large shipbuilding projects within the country.

Promoting domestic shipbuilding is strategically important. Beyond improving the efficiency of defense budget management, it will also reduce dependence on imported technologies, strengthen industrial security, create employment opportunities, and enhance the knowledge and expertise of the Thai workforce. Ultimately, it will lay the foundation for Thailand to develop the capability to build, repair, and maintain large vessels within the Southeast Asian region.
